NOTE: This document covers connecting an Allen & Heath console to LiveTrax using the Allen & Heath control surface module in LiveTrax. This is not for DAW control using the Mackie protocol.
While some Allen & Heath consoles can connect directly via USB MIDI others use an Ethernet connection.
The dLive, Avantis, and QU 5/6/7 (USB or Ethernet) are examples of consoles that connect via Ethernet using the "Allen & Heath MIDI Control" application.
The Allen & Heath MIDI Control application is mac/windows software that connects a computer to the console and provides virtual MIDI ports to the computer. It can be downloaded free from https://www.allen-heath.com/hardware/controllers/midi-control/ For more detailed information about the MIDI Control Application, please see the manual Allen & Heath MIDI Control Help – Allen & Heath
Note: Screen shots in this guide were taken using a QU-6 console.
Step 1
Download and install the Allen & Heath MIDI control app on the same computer that is running Live Trax.
Step 2
Ensure that the computer running LiveTrax and the Allen & Heath console are both connected to the same Ethernet network.
Step 3
Start the MIDI control application and configure as follows and then click the "Connect" box.
- Mixer: Select your device model.
- Protocol: MIDI Thru
- Select TCP/IP
- Select the IP address via auto-detection or manually enter the IP address. In the example below a QU-6 device was auto detected on the network and then selected.
Step 4
Verify that the application is connected to your mixer by ensuring it says "Connected" in the bottom left corner.
Step 5
Start LiveTrax and go to Preferences -> Control Surfaces.
- Enable the "Allen & Heath" protocol
Step 6
Click the "Show Protocol Settings" button. MIDI Control 1 will automatically be selected for both incoming and outgoing MIDI.
- Select the correct device type.
- Set the MIDI channel which must match the MIDI Channel setting on the Allen & Heath console.
Step 7
The setup is now complete, and the dialogs boxes can be closed. The connection can be confirmed by using the MMC transport control buttons from the console and seeing that LiveTrax responds.
